School Profile

The Vaughansfield Primary and Infant School is located in the community of Flamstead Garden, a rural farming community in the constituency of South St. James. Unemployment is approximately 70% of the adult population.Hence attendance is affected especially on Mondays,Thursdays and Fridays. The schooI was built to accommodate seven hundred (700) students. The school operates whole day from 8:15 am to 2:45pm. The school's population has dwindled over the years due to adults moving into the parish capital in search of employment.

At present there are two hundred and eighty (280) students on roll with a staff of ten teachers inclusive of the Principal, Vice Principal and Guidance Counsellor. The school yard is not enclosed and this has led to numerous uninvited guests invading the compound on a daily basis during school hours.

The Early Childhood department which is a separate building opened its doors in 1969 and caters to children from age 4 years. At 6 years old they are mainstreamed in the primary section of the school. Attendance is at an average 75%.

In 2006, the Infant Department was given a new roof and was partitioned into 3 separate classrooms. Each class has its own entrance. However, once inside, you can access all three classrooms without having to return outside. There is adequate furniture and seating for all students. There is electricity and water.

The school has two entrances, one has a footbridge because there is a river on the school property. Children have been educated about the dangers of the river and there has never been any report of serious mishaps to students due to close proximity of the river to the school.

Students who attend the Vaughansfield Primary School and Infant School are from the communities of: Flamstead Garden, Tangle River, Roper, Maldon, GermanTown, Vaughansfield, Backwood, Pimento Hill, Garlands, and Jackson Road.
