PAROTTEE POINTS OF INTEREST

Pelican Bar

The Pelican Bar is one of Jamaica’s’ best spots for lunch, watching the sun set over the Caribbean, or simply chilling out with a cool drink. It is built on a sandbar 1km off shore and can be reached easily by chartering with a local captain at a very reasonable price.

Fishing With the Locals

If it’s fresh fish you want, why not charter a private fishing trip with one of our local fishermen? These charters are not the usual tourist attractions but rather a one to one arrangement with the men who fish for a living. Learn about the local waters, the type of fish available, the local fishing industry and how it has evolved over generations.

OTHER NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

Black River Nature Tours

Several companies offer tours up the Black River into the Great Morass. Afternoon tours are best for seeing crocodiles; early morning and evening tours offer ideal bird watching. The tour takes about an hour and a half and leaves from the bridge on Main Street.

YS Falls

This beautiful natural setting has been rated as one of Jamaica’s best by many. There is a series of eight cascades located in a pristine unspoiled forest. You will find picnic grounds, a park like setting, and a pool for bathing. It is a lovely place to spend a few hours or an entire day. It is located just easy of Middle Quarters.

Bamboo Avenue

Majestic indigenous bamboos provide an elegant arch over this quiet stretch of road from Black River to Santa Cruz. This, the largest species of bamboo in Jamaica, is over 100 years old. There are several interesting stops along the way where one can enjoy a picnic of pepper shrimp and coconut water brought from roadside venders in Middle Quarters.

Black River Market

This open air street market is similar to those found in Africa and other developing areas. It is a mix of lean-to structures covered with thatch and tarps attended by friendly smiling local merchants and growers. The food is fresh and varied. You can find produce, fish, root vegetables, household goods, clothing and shoes and souvenirs . It is open everyday except Sunday and especially fun on Fridays and Saturdays.

Parish Church of John the Evangelist

This classic yellow brick church, built in 1837 is one of the historic structures worth checking out. It is located on the corner of North and Main Streets in the center of Black River.
