The Drews Avenue Primary School was opened in 1970. The school is situated in the parish of St. Andrew. It is located in the semi-depressed community of Drewsland and is bordered by the Sandy Gully and Waterhouse on the south and the Washington Boulevard on the north. The school was built to accommodate 1200 students. Due to domestic and internal community violence in the late 1970's and early 1980's a rapid migration of students took place. The school now operated on a straight day from 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. At present there is an enrolment of over seven hundred students.

There is an Early Childhood Department which caters for children from four years old. At six years old they are mainstreamed in the Primary section of the school.

The school plant is fairly well kept. Buildings and classrooms are in good condition. The plant is adequately lit and there is electricity in all the classrooms which are partitioned by solid blocked walls. Students are comfortably seated and the classrooms are spacious and well ventilated.

The majority of the students come from very humble homes, where low socio-economic conditions, as well as lack of parental motivation and interest prevent them from attending school regularly. The school has an incentive programme which encourages regular attendance.

Poor nutrition is another factor which impinges negatively on the students’ educational growth, as many of these students attend school without breakfast and or lunch. The school has a very effective breakfast and lunch programme.
